Personally I have 2007 Norton AV and I'm wanting to change it anyway. Lags my comp badly. I'd advise just get a new anti-virus. Probably Kaspersky, Eset NOD32 or Bitdefender ( Bitdefender has the same malware detection rate as Kaspersky and Norton, the top two AV in PCWorld, but the proactive detection, I'm guessing the real-time protection has a better percentage.

I have an opportunity to buy a Norton product from an individual who is not personally known to me, although on the surface this person seems sufficiently trustworthy for an interaction of this magnitude. For discussion purposes here, presume the product to be (what he claims to be) a new, sealed OEM box of 3-user Norton 360 V2 on CD. If I was to buy this as a strictly private-party transaction, is there a way that I could quickly confirm (or deny) that the Product Activation Key was still valid (unused), short of installing the software on one of my computers and then seeing whether or not it would activate under my Norton account/userid? Also, if all three license instances were still available to me at the time of purchase, is there any way I could restrict anyone else from using that key in the future, since the seller could theoretically have written down the Key Code before sending it to me and might try to use it himself, or re-sell it to anyone else, later?

If someone has written the Product Key, there is nothing stopping them from Selling that Product Key on to someone else, or using it 'himself'. How much is 'he' offering to Sell it to you for?
I personally would advise not doing the deal, un-less you know the person inside-out, e.g. A family member; therefore, I would advise that you go to a well-known computer shop - or symantec's Online Store - and Buy your Norton Product that way. They will be able to find out the exact status- whether any of the licenses is already used or not, how many licenses that the Product key have, whether it is already registered in any other Norton Account etc. Let us know the results. Of course you can do this, but this may take up time and that is the reason why I did not mention it. Also, obviously, the User would have to get the Product Key from the persons to see if it works as you cannot exactly say: 'Could you read me out - or show me - the P.K. So I can check with symantec Customer Services that it has not been Used already.' Appreciate the responses so far.

If I were to buy a Norton software product from some eBay seller, I suppose I could get it cheaper than a recognized/trusted brick-and-mortar or mainstream-online seller, but the risk of buying an already-used product raises a big red flag. In the case of eBay, I suppose the way to go would be to buy the product if the price was right and hold off on giving feedback to the seller until I determined for sure whether or not the product keys were all still unused.
If one or more of the licenses/activations had, in fact, already been registered, that would be grounds for giving negative eBay feedback against the seller's user-ID. An effective retaliation against false-pretense selling that few eBay sellers would be willing to risk. Of course, nothing would still prevent that seller from using one or more of 'my' activations later if he had the code and was no longer at risk of getting negative feedback from a buyer.
